Be gone, stay gone and don’t come back
Thu ,23/07/2009There’s is so much of newsworthy note going on this evening fed by today’s events that I struggled as to find a place to start. I was holding off for Norwich but knowing that the returning officer isn’t around until tomorrow what should I fill the gap with?
Well, I could have easily gone down the route of the old currant bun with this little titbit (which reaffirms the previous statement that ‘would see troops go to the top of NHS queues’) but what would that have achieved save for making the Government supporters reading this blog feel even more insecure than they already do?
I could have gone down the route of swine flu but just about every blog in every theme in every country in the world will be leading on this so I shan’t be bothering. No. Tonight I am taking a very brief look at the plight of Rochelle Wallis who is a Canadian citizen by birth but who’s husband is Welsh. Incidentally, this story is being pursued by BBC Newsnight this evening and no doubt a thousand other bloggers tomorrow!
You see, Rochelle’s problem is that she fell in love, not just that she fell in love but that she fell in love whilst being under the age of 21! Rochelle is not an instant bride, she is not to be found in the back pages of a seedy magazine or on the walls of phone booth as part of some imigration scam to marry individuals off to citizens of the UK. Rochelle is genuinely in love and her marriage is genuine. Because of that does she receive better treatment than a scammer? Does her case get looked at leniently? No, it does not. Rochelle is to be deported until she reaches the age of 21 at which point she can resume her relationship with her husband, Adam.
Adam’s MP is Mark Williams who, it has to be said seems to be one of the most ineffectual MP’s and one that I certainly would not like to go cap in hand to has described the case as an:
inconvenience
That, to me is totally disgraceful but it is not me that is being deported. Rochelle, on the other hand is and has this to say:
It’s more than an inconvenience, he’s ripping my marriage apart – he’s taking the only thing I have and throwing it away
What’s more is the situation was worsened by the fact that the Government agency lost their passport photographs which forced them to try to organise a wedding with only 7 days to go, this was, unexpectedly impossible.
I could continue this blog but I feel that this story has way too much to run prior to Rochelle being deported. I do not know the angle that Newsnight is taking tonight nor do I know how much pressure will be put on the authorities to sort this out with a view to Rochelle being granted a full passport and UK citizenship if required? So on that note I shall leave this point and see what comes of the next few days; you can rest assured that I shall be revisiting this blog in the future.
Stay tuned!
